Bum Soup

If you’ve ever seen our book Under the Mango Tree, you may recall seeing a section titled Soup for Bums. And some very mouth watering recipes they are indeed! The recipes, however, are not the point of this story.

Being the word play lover that he is, and although the days are long gone when backpackers weren’t a highly sought after market, Glenbo thought it would be a great idea to use the old euphemism of the word Bum, combined with the plethora of them around the Nadi Bay pool, to setup a nutty visual concept for the book.

Now being the loose lot that we are, we pretty much dive into anything… Peter however, didn’t seem so enthusiastic this time around. It wasn’t until much later that we learnt why… Somewhere along the line, Peter’s interpretation went from “Soup for Bums” to the much less appealing “Bum Soup”, and the term was born – well in our office, anyway.

From then on, any communication breakdown became known as “Bum Soup”…

Bum Soup – Lost in translation, the mixing up of words such as to change the meaning of a sentence, usually for the worse.

So, Peter… for your efforts in advancing the vocabulary of mankind, I raise my next fresh green coconut.
